Welcome to the Township of Georgian Bay:
About one half hour north of Barrie on Highway 400, you will enter the Township of Georgian Bay at Port Severn, the main gateway to the west side of Muskoka. The Township consists of two urban centers; one in the South called Port Severn and one in the North is MacTier. Both of these towns are serviced by water and sewer and are anxious to support new development. Port Severn has a number of new developments in the Planning stages with one already well under way and recently they opened a world class 18 Hole Golf Course. Port Severn is also the gateway to the Trent Severn Waterway at Lock 45 and the famous Marine Railway at Big Chute.
From Exit 156 at Port Severn when one travels north-westerly along Muskoka Road 5, you will enter the beautiful Hamlet of Honey Harbour. Honey Harbour is home to numerous marinas and places of accommodation providing service to residents and visitors. The 30,000 Islands stretch northward from Honey Harbour along the eastern shore of Georgian Bay. They form a beautiful archipelago with unique and, in my opinion, the most beautiful rock formations in the world. Our Township boasts to be the 13th UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in Canada.
Traveling further north on Highway 400, each exit provides access to different sections of Georgian Bay or the many Lakes and Rivers which are enjoyed by both permanent and seasonal residents. Exit 189 takes you into MacTier, a town that was built around the CP Railroad. A new Library built to look like the original railway station is the centerpiece at the end of the main street. A caboose compliments the property allowing old and young to enjoy a unique look into MacTier’s past. It is for the most part a self-sustaining town with an arena/recreation center, lumber yard, grocery store, hardware store, liquor store, ambulance station, post office and numerous other small businesses, each one complimenting the other.
Many Baby Boomers have decided to vacate their city dwellings and convert their summer home into an “all” season residence. We welcome them with open arms as their presence throughout the seasons makes functions an exciting reality. Our Township has several groups and organizations including two Snowmobile Clubs, an ATV Club, very active Chamber of Commerce, three Historical Societies and three Libraries just to name a few. In recent months Council has supported starting a wellness center, which includes a Psychiatrist, Chiropractor, Foot Care Specialist, Dental Hygienist and a registered Massage Therapist.
So, come on up (or down as the case may be) get off at Exit 156, go to the Bressette House on Lone Pine Road and a Muskoka Tourism or a Chamber of Commerce representative will gladly show you all the nifty places to visit, guide you to a variety of dining experiences, or direct you to any one of the numerous places of accommodation.
Travel safely,
Mayor Larry Braid
